We Got A Sneak Peek at the Next Guardians of the Galaxy
Dan Flores reveals the incredible coyote, our canid cousins. Plus: Sean Connery, the next Looney Tunes movie, & the Marvel Cinematic Universe
This was a fun episode. Joey said Haroon came off as “likable,” which he’ll take as a compliment. We talked about fission and fusion but never once stepped into the Strait of Hormuz. Episode 20 began when, some months back, Joey asked Haroon if he’d ever read Dan Flores’ Coyote America. Haroon revealed that he had not and sadly hadn’t even heard of it. That was Haroon’s loss.
As soon as he started listening, he knew Avenue M was onto someone big. Big history. Big insights. Dan Flores has been a guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast, one of our peer competitors and made an appearance on Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown—as of today, he’s made it to Avenue M. We’re honored. This was a delightful episode, which’ll enlighten, challenge, entertain, and reframe how you think of America.
In Coyote America, Dan Flores revealed the remarkable history of human-coyote interactions; God produced a canid that is uncannily like us. Over the centuries, despite determined campaigns to literally extinct them—like campaigns that felled bison and most wolves—coyotes did more than persevere. They’ve thrived, spreading across the contiguous United States.
The history of the coyote is the history of our nation—which, as Dan insists, doesn’t have to be Britain or France, not way back when and certainly not now. Flores shares what we Americans can learn from Kenyans, Tanzanians and South Africans. Plus, there’s always Looney Tunes. Seriously. We learned that, on August 28, a full-length Wile E. Coyote movie drops in theaters across America.
The conversation closes on a whole new chapter of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Consider this the most lightning lightning round on Avenue M yet.
Episode 20: American History 007
Flores is, of course, the author of Coyote America, as well as American Serengeti: The Last Big Animals on the Great Plains and Wild New World: The Epic Story of Animals and People in America. Raised in Louisiana, Flores is a New Mexican today.
Not only an accomplished writer, he’s a historian and former professor, who spent many years at the University of Montana. One of your co-host’s wives suggested he beared an uncanny resemblance to Sean Connery, which did not threaten him in the least, because of course men have evolved past such concerns and if we’re all special, we’re all alphas.

One wife in particular doesn’t know it, but we’ve got a date night planned. Maybe even a double-date night, since after all it’s Joey and Haroon.
